Years ago, I sat at a desk running numbers for the Canadian Government — the first female actuary to hold that role, precise to the decimal, measuring risk for a living. It earned me a Centenary Medal. It also taught me something I didn’t expect: numbers can tell you almost everything about probability, and almost nothing about what a life is actually worth living for.

I’ve stood on the deck of the National Geographic Endurance in Antarctica, watching the light do something I still can’t fully describe — and I’ve had the chance to meet Sven Lindblad himself, the man whose name is synonymous with expedition travel done right.

I received my Tauck Certified Advisor designation directly from Arthur Tauck, aboard ms Savor in Europe. I’ve dined with Rudi Schriner and Kristin Karst, sat with Michelle Palma aboard Uniworld’s S.S. Emilie, and shared a table with Ellen Bettridge.

I toured Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot — their luxury icebreaker — in Quebec, under Captain Patrick Marchesseau. In 2008, Captain Marchesseau kept his crew safe and led them through a week-long hostage crisis after Somali pirates seized his ship, Le Ponant, in the Gulf of Aden. Standing on his bridge, hearing that steadiness firsthand, is not something you get from a brochure.

I’ve sailed the Rhine on AmaCerto through the Christmas markets, the Seine on AmaDante timed to Normandy’s Remembrance Day, and the Danube on Scenic Amber with a group of women who came home changed. I sailed Australia and New Zealand aboard Silversea’s Silver Nova, and explored Turkey aboard Explora Journeys. And I sat with Kristin Karst again in Amsterdam, hearing about Colombia’s Magdalena River before most of North America had ever considered it.

Why a Travel Advisor Still Matters in the Age of AI Search

Anyone can search “best river cruise” or “Antarctica expedition ships” and get a list. What that list won’t tell you is which 40-minute connection in Miami is a disaster waiting to happen, which ship’s IAATO category actually determines whether you get off the boat at all, or which “luxury” itinerary is luxury in name only.

I’m not competing with a search engine. I’m offering the thing a search engine can’t: someone who has actually been there, who knows the difference between good marketing and a good trip, and who will tell you the truth even when it’s not the easy answer.
