They say New Zealand is magical. I say that doesn’t even begin to cover it.
I’ve just returned from an unforgettable cruise through Aotearoa, and every moment felt like a scene from a dream — full of stunning landscapes, unexpected wildlife encounters, and soul-stirring experiences. Whether you’re a wildlife lover, a history buff, a wine enthusiast, or just need to breathe deeply again, New Zealand delivers.

🌿 WILD ENCOUNTERS AT OROKONUI 🦜🇳🇿
Just outside Dunedin, Orokonui Ecosanctuary gave us a front-row seat to New Zealand’s native wildlife — up close and unforgettable!
🔊 First came the tūī, serenading us with their robotic, otherworldly calls. These birds sound like they’re beatboxing in the bush!
🦶 Then came the cheeky kākā, stepping on custom-designed trays to open their own feeders — and fiercely defending them from snack-stealing blackbirds.
🟦 But the most touching moment? Watching a takahē and her chick wander through the grass. Once thought extinct, this flightless bird is now one of New Zealand’s most powerful conservation stories.
If you’re heading to New Zealand, don’t miss Orokonui. It’s more than a sanctuary — it’s a living, breathing celebration of resilience and renewal.

🚢 SAILING AWAY FROM DUNEDIN… 🌊🇳🇿
There’s something deeply peaceful about watching the coastline slip away as you set sail. As we cruised north toward Christchurch aboard Silver Nova, the sea sparkled, the air was crisp, and time seemed to slow in the best way. This is slow travel at its finest — pure serenity.
🌊 A GENTLE ADVENTURE IN CHRISTCHURCH 🚤✨
A smaller Discovery Cruise through Christchurch Harbour offered the sweetest kind of surprise — dramatic cliffs, peaceful rolling hills, and yes, even a fleeting dolphin sighting. The magic was in the stillness, the breeze, and the reminder that sometimes the simplest excursions are the most special.
🌄 SAILING OUT OF CHRISTCHURCH
As the South Island faded behind us, the sky turned soft and pastel. A perfect farewell to Christchurch — a place full of gentle beauty and resilient spirit. With Wellington on the horizon, it felt like we were turning the page to another unforgettable chapter.
🌿 HELLO, WELLINGTON! ✨
New Zealand’s compact, creative capital surprised me at every turn. From tucked-away cafés to coastal trails and lush gardens, Wellington is the kind of city you feel as much as you explore.

🌸 The Wellington Botanic Garden was a personal highlight — tranquil, winding paths, native ferns, seasonal blooms, and sculpture surprises around every bend. A true reset.
🚠 Then came the iconic cable car — pure retro charm with sweeping city views. Who knew public transport could feel like a movie scene?
🏞️ And from the summit of Mount Victoria, we soaked in panoramic views of the city and harbour. Plus, a little Lord of the Rings magic — yes, scenes were filmed here!
🏛️ At Te Papa Museum, a private tour brought New Zealand’s story to life: from ancient Zealandia to the Treaty of Waitangi, and from the native kiwi to the now-extinct moa. Te Papa is a must — a window into the soul of Aotearoa.
🎨 A DAY IN NAPIER 🚜✨

In this charming Art Deco town, we boarded the quirky Hawke’s Bay Express — part train, part tractor, and 100% delightful. After a fun and informative loop, I wandered galleries, browsed boutiques, and soaked up the relaxed seaside vibe that makes Napier such a joy.
⛵ SAILING AUCKLAND HARBOUR
Wind in our sails, history in our hearts. Our sailing excursion offered not just a thrill, but a story of national pride — New Zealand’s love affair with the sea, and the legacy of the America’s Cup. Then, the Maritime Museum brought it all to life — from Zealandia’s origins to the seismic nature of this dynamic land. (Yes, they get earthquakes almost daily — most too small to feel!)
And a sweet personal connection: Captain Cook explored both New Zealand and my home province of Newfoundland, including two places both called the Bay of Islands. Serendipity.
🍷 A PERFECT FAREWELL AT SOLJANS ESTATE WINERY
Our last stop was pure indulgence — an intimate tasting and lunch at Soljans Estate & Winery, just outside Auckland. Hosted by Tony Soljan, the third-generation winemaker, we sipped five incredible wines (the tawny port came home with me!) and learned about Croatian winemaking heritage, grape grafting, and the Méthode Traditionnelle.
It was the perfect blend of storytelling, legacy, and exceptional wine — and a beautiful toast to an unforgettable trip.
💬 New Zealand works its magic one moment at a time — whether it’s a bird song, a garden path, a glass of wine, or a gliding sailboat.
If it’s not on your bucket list yet, it should be.
