Norway: Where Nature Still Feels Wild ❤️!

There are some places in the world that simply feel different the moment you arrive.

Norway is one of them.

Towering fjords carved by glaciers. Tiny red-roofed fishing villages hugging dramatic coastlines. Waterfalls cascading down mountainsides. Viking history. Midnight sun in summer. Northern Lights in winter. Quiet moments that make you stop talking and simply stare out the window.

It’s no surprise Norway has captured the imagination of travellers around the world — and yes, even inspired Disney’s Frozen. The landscapes truly do feel cinematic. But Norway is far more than a movie backdrop. It’s one of the most beautiful and emotionally grounding destinations I’ve ever experienced.

From the UNESCO-listed fjords to the iconic stave churches that seem pulled from another century, Norway offers something rare in modern travel: space to breathe. These remarkable medieval wooden churches — with their dark timber construction, dragon-head carvings, and Viking-era influences — feel almost mystical against the dramatic mountain scenery.

And then there are the fjords themselves.

Geirangerfjord. Nærøyfjord. Sognefjord. Hardangerfjord.

The names alone evoke adventure.

You can stand atop dramatic viewpoints like Trolltunga or Pulpit Rock, ride the breathtaking Flåm Railway through steep mountain valleys, wander colourful Bergen with its UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf, or sail quietly past waterfalls that tumble hundreds of feet into impossibly still water below.

One of the best ways to experience Norway is by sea.

The coastline itself is part of the story — thousands of kilometres of dramatic scenery, remote communities, tiny harbours, and landscapes that constantly shift from rugged to impossibly serene.

For travellers wanting a more authentic coastal immersion, I love Hurtigruten’s legendary coastal voyages, including The Coastal Express Southbound. Hurtigruten has been sailing the Norwegian coast for over 130 years, and these voyages feel deeply connected to Norway itself — less “cruise” and more living, breathing coastal journey. (Or, of course, my partners at Norwegian Adventures can get you hiking in the fjord land and beyond – see partner section.)

For expedition travellers looking to combine Norway with Iceland and the Faroe Islands, Lindblad Expeditions’ Coastal Wonders of Norway, the Faroe Islands & Iceland offers an extraordinary deeper exploration with the kind of enrichment and expedition experience Lindblad does so well.

And Norway isn’t only about scenery — the culinary scene has quietly become one of the most exciting in Northern Europe.

Fresh Arctic seafood. King crab. Salmon. Brown cheese. Nordic tasting menus. Cozy waterfront cafés. Michelin-starred restaurants focused on hyper-local ingredients and seasonal simplicity.

In cities like Oslo and Bergen, the New Nordic food movement blends innovation with deep connection to nature — and some of the world’s best seafood comes directly from these cold northern waters.

You can ride scenic railways through mountains, kayak through fjords, stay in design-forward Nordic hotels, chase waterfalls, visit Arctic communities, or simply slow down and embrace the Norwegian concept of nature, simplicity, and wellbeing.

There’s also something emotionally restorative about Norway. Perhaps it’s the clean air, the stillness of the fjords, or the feeling of being surrounded by nature on a scale that reminds you how big and beautiful the world still is.

If Norway has been on your list, this may be the year to go.
