When most people hear the words wellness travel, they imagine a luxury spa.
Massage tables. Yoga classes at sunrise. Green juices. Meditation retreats.
I love those experiences too.
But after sailing around Iceland’s spectacular coastline aboard Aurora Expeditions’ Sylvia Earle, I’ve become convinced that some of the most profound wellness experiences don’t happen inside a spa at all.
They happen when you finally slow down enough to notice what’s already in front of you.
I Thought Kirkjufell Was the Destination
Few places in Iceland are photographed more than Kirkjufell.
Rising above the fishing village of Grundarfjörður on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, its distinctive shape has become one of Iceland’s most recognizable landmarks. Many people know it as “Arrowhead Mountain” from Game of Thrones. For others, it’s simply one of the country’s most iconic views.
Naturally, I couldn’t wait to see it.
As part of ACTA’s Immersive Expedition Cruise program, I was travelling aboard Aurora Expeditions’ Sylvia Earle, expecting Kirkjufell to be one of the highlights of the voyage.
And it was.
Just not for the reason I expected.
The Moment That Wasn’t on the Itinerary
Standing there with my camera, I noticed something quietly unfolding beneath the mountain.
A small group of Icelandic horses grazed peacefully on the hillside.
They weren’t performing for visitors.
They weren’t part of an organized excursion.
They had absolutely no interest in the dozens of people photographing one of Iceland’s most famous mountains.
They simply existed—calm, steady, completely at home in a landscape that most of us travel thousands of kilometres to experience.
Suddenly, the mountain became the backdrop.
The horses became the moment.
And that’s exactly why I love expedition cruising.
Expedition Cruising Changes How You Experience a Destination
People often assume expedition cruising is all about adventure.
Zodiac landings.
Kayaking.
Wildlife encounters.
Remote destinations.
Those experiences certainly matter.
But after sailing on expedition ships from Antarctica to Iceland, I’ve realized the greatest luxury expedition cruising offers isn’t access.
It’s attention.
Because expedition cruising isn’t designed around rushing from one attraction to the next.
It’s designed around observation.
Expert naturalists help you notice details you would have walked past.
Marine biologists explain the ecosystems around you.
Historians provide context that transforms scenery into stories.
Photographers encourage you to slow down rather than simply snap another picture.
The itinerary creates something we rarely experience in everyday life:
Space.
Space to observe.
Space to learn.
Space to be surprised.
Space to simply be present.
Why This Is Wellness Travel
Last week I wrote about research suggesting travel may help reduce dementia risk by challenging our brains with new environments, cultures, languages, and experiences.
But wellness isn’t only about keeping our minds active.
It’s also about giving our nervous systems permission to slow down.
Modern life asks us to multitask.
Nature asks us to notice.
There’s growing evidence that spending time in natural environments can lower stress hormones, improve mood, restore attention, and enhance overall wellbeing.
Expedition cruising naturally creates those moments because the journey itself encourages curiosity rather than urgency.
No one is asking you to hurry.
No one is asking you to check your email.
No one is asking what’s next.
You’re simply invited to pay attention.
The Return on Life™
As a travel advisor, I often tell clients I don’t sell cruises.
I help people maximize their Return on Life™.
Because anyone can book transportation.
What truly changes us are the moments we never knew we needed.
A puffin landing a few feet away.
The silence of Antarctica.
A whale surfacing unexpectedly.
Or a handful of Icelandic horses grazing beneath one of the world’s most photographed mountains.
Those moments aren’t listed in brochures.
Yet years later, they’re often the stories people still tell.
Sometimes the Best Part Isn’t What You Came to See
I arrived at Kirkjufell expecting to admire the mountain.
I left thinking about the horses.
That unexpected shift reminded me that wellness isn’t always something we schedule.
Sometimes it’s simply the gift of being present enough to notice what everyone else walks past.
And perhaps that’s the greatest lesson expedition travel has to offer.
Sometimes the mountain is the destination.
Sometimes it’s simply where the real moment happens.
Thinking About an Expedition Cruise?
If you’re looking for a different kind of wellness travel—one rooted in nature, curiosity, learning, and presence—an expedition cruise may be exactly what you didn’t know you needed.
Whether it’s Iceland, Antarctica, the Arctic, the Galápagos, or another extraordinary destination, the greatest luxury isn’t simply getting there.
It’s having the time to truly experience it.
Because that’s where the greatest Return on Life™ begins.
