What Canadians — Especially Dual Citizens — Must Know Before Boarding
As of February 25, 2026, the United Kingdom’s new digital border system is fully enforced.
And yes — travellers are being denied boarding.
Let’s make this simple and clear.
✈️ If You Are Travelling to the UK on a Canadian Passport
Canadian passport holders must now obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK for tourism, family visits, business, or short stays (up to six months).
This is official UK government policy:

Important details:
✔️ ETA approval is required before boarding
✔️ Airlines, ferries, and trains must refuse travel without it
✔️ The ETA is not a visa (similar to the U.S. ESTA)
✔️ It is digitally linked to your passport
💷 Current cost: approximately £16–£20
📅 Valid for 2 years or until passport expiry (whichever comes first)
No ETA = no boarding.
👥 Dual Canadian–UK Citizens: This Is Where It Gets Serious
If you are legally a British citizen, you:
❌ Cannot apply for a UK ETA ❌ Cannot enter the UK using only your Canadian passport

If you are British (even by descent), you must travel with:
✔️ A valid UK passport OR
✔️ A Certificate of Entitlement proving right of abode (apparently this certificate option might be changing- check with UK government)
Many Canadians are discovering they are British citizens without realizing it — particularly if:
One parent was born in the UK
You were born outside the UK
Your parent was a British citizen at the time of your birth
Citizenship rules depend on birth year and parental status.

If you are British, the ETA is not an option — you must renew or obtain a UK passport before travel.
Overseas passport renewals can take several weeks.
🇪🇺 Europe: 2026 Border Changes Continue
If your trip includes continental Europe:
EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
• Biometric registration (photo + fingerprints) on first entry • No fee • Possible longer queues during rollout
EU ETIAS (Beginning October 2026)
• Required for Canadians entering the Schengen Area • Approx. €20 • Valid for 3 years
Digital borders are now the norm.
📌 An Important Professional Reminder
While I design seamless travel experiences, passport validity, visa requirements, ETAs, and entry documentation remain the traveller’s responsibility.
As outlined in every Lush Life/ Direct Travel invoice:
• Passports should be valid for at least 6 months beyond return date • Clients are responsible for securing and fulfilling visa and passport requirements • Entry to a country may be refused even if documentation appears complete • Processing times for passports and visas can be lengthy
Modern travel requires proactive documentation management.
