There’s something special about arriving in Amsterdam and heading straight to the river.
Even with a soft drizzle in the air, the scene felt like a perfect welcome — a lineup of beautiful river ships docked side by side, each representing a different style, philosophy, and experience.

🌍 What This Event Really Is (And Why It Matters)
This week, I’m attending the ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam — alongside more than 1,600 travel advisors from around the world.
And notably, I’m one of the few Canadians here 🇨🇦.
Over the course of just a few days, I’ll be:
✔️ Touring 16 river cruise ships
✔️ Meeting directly with cruise line executives and leadership teams
✔️ Comparing cabins, layouts, service styles, and inclusions
✔️ Experiencing ships firsthand — not through brochures, but in real life
Because in today’s travel world, firsthand insight is everything.
🎥 First Look: Ships in Amsterdam
This was my very first stop — the pier.
A simple moment… but one that sets the tone.
Because when you see multiple ships lined up like this, you quickly realize:
Not all river cruises are the same.
And that’s exactly why being here matters.
✨ Behind the Scenes Onboard S.S. Emilie
One of the standout evenings took place onboard Uniworld’s S.S. Emilie — surrounded by fellow advisors, industry leaders, and the Virtuoso network.
Hosted by Michelle Palma from Uniworld, alongside Tony Logan and members of the Virtuoso team, this wasn’t just a beautiful event.
It was where:
- Conversations happen that shape future travel experiences
- Relationships are strengthened
- And real insight is shared — the kind you can’t Google
As a Virtuoso Cruise Icon (top 1% globally), this is where I stay connected at the highest level of the industry — so my clients benefit from that access.
🎨 16 Ships Later… One That Truly Stood Out
After touring 16 ships, one continued to stand out:
S.S. Emilie
Inspired by Emilie Flöge — artist, designer, and Gustav Klimt’s life partner — the ship feels different from the moment you step onboard.
It’s not just luxury.
It’s personality, artistry, and atmosphere woven into every detail.
And that’s what I’m looking for when I evaluate ships for my clients:
👉 Not just what looks good
👉 But what feels right — depending on your travel style
🧭 Why This Matters for You
It would be easy to scroll through photos online and think most river cruises are similar.
They’re not.
The differences are in:
- Cabin design and layout
- Service style and onboard culture
- Excursion philosophy (included vs optional, active vs relaxed)
- Dining experience and wine programs
- Overall vibe — classic, contemporary, or boutique luxury
And those differences are what determine whether your trip is simply good… or truly unforgettable.
❤️ The Bottom Line
This isn’t just a conference.
This is where I:
✔️ Stay ahead of industry changes
✔️ Experience ships firsthand
✔️ Strengthen relationships with the people behind the brands
✔️ And bring that knowledge back to you
Because when you’re investing in a river cruise, you deserve more than options.
You deserve the right one.
