Sheila Spotlight: Helping People Experience the World Well

This week, I was featured in Travelweek, sharing what it really looks like to guide clients through today’s increasingly complex travel landscape.

At the heart of it, my philosophy hasn’t changed — even if the world around us has.

💬 “In many ways, the core of the job hasn’t changed: helping people experience the world well.”

🌍 What Has Changed

Travel has always been one of the first industries impacted when the world shifts.

But what feels different now is the speed and complexity.

💬 “What has changed is the volume and complexity of information clients now need to navigate safely and confidently.”

From digital travel requirements to evolving entry rules, even something seemingly simple — like the UK’s new ETA system — can create widespread confusion.

When I shared a quick breakdown on social media, the response was immediate:

💬 “95% of the reactions were from people who don’t even follow my page… that tells me a lot of travellers simply weren’t aware of the change.”

🧭 My Role: Interpreter, Strategist, Guide

In today’s environment, my role goes far beyond booking travel.

It’s about interpretation and education.

💬 “We can’t control government policy or border rules, but we can help travellers understand them and point them to reliable sources.”

That might mean:

  • Helping clients understand new visa or entry requirements
  • Providing context around global events
  • Breaking down what’s relevant — and what’s not

For example:

✔️ When clients were concerned about safety in Mexico due to news from a region 2,000 km away, I used tools like Rome2Rio to help them visualize distance and context

✔️ When another client worried about geopolitical tensions affecting a European river cruise, I shared perspective:

💬 “Europe is large and stable, cruise lines are operating normally — and I’m heading there myself, which allows me to give real-time, on-the-ground feedback.”

🧠 How I Guide Clients Through Uncertainty

Every conversation comes back to clarity.

I walk clients through three key questions:

1️⃣ What is actually happening? (based on verified sources)
2️⃣ What are your options? (travel, modify, or cancel)
3️⃣ What are the financial implications? (policies, protections, next steps)

💬 “That clarity is what helps travellers feel comfortable moving forward.”

🛠️ Behind the Scenes

  • To stay ahead, I rely on:
  • Official government advisories
  • Airline and cruise line updates
  • Trusted visa partners like CIBT
  • And my global network of industry relationships

Combined with firsthand experience — like attending the ASTA River Cruise Expo — this allows me to give clients real, current, and grounded advice.

❤️ The Bottom Line

In a world where travel feels more complicated than ever…

My role is simple:

To help you experience the world well — with clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.

And that’s what “return on life” is all about.
