On Wednesday, I hosted Shayna Zand of Intrepid and Peregrine to talk about solo travel. We had a great crowd.
Of course, with solo travel, you can either:
1.) pay a solo supplement – which is often 200% of a double-occupancy rate
2.) find a company that has low (or occasionally waived) solo supplement
3.) find a company that allows for same sex share rooms
There are many companies that offer waived solo supplements. For cruising, Avalon Waterways is one that often offers some waived solo supplements on select cruises. Tauck river cruising also waives single supplement on every category 1 on each sailing. And some companies like Crystal always have low or reduced single supplements (typically 125%, although they sometimes waive as well.) Some cruise companies like NCL now offer solo cabins.
For adventure travel, companies like Intrepid and Peregrine also typically have a low single supplement if you wish to have your own room. The amount will vary with the location (e.g., it’ll be more expensive in Burma than it would be in Portugal), but the amounts are very reasonable for a single room. Or, you can also indicate that you would like to share a room on a same sex share basis – and that way be paired up with another solo traveler of the same sex who also wishes to share. Such options as same sex share allow both passengers to not pay the large solo supplement, and be paired with another single in the same boat (whether it’s a land or sea trip!).
Even luxury companies get into this sort of arranged. Same sex share basis are available on Lindblad Expedition cruises as well (although they also have a small number of solo cabins.)
The market place is finally paying attention to solo travelers, and there are more and more options available. Of course, one of the benefits of bringing people in Ottawa together this week is that they might also find another single person to travel with!
And – I have a 10% off offer for Peregrine Adventure trips booked with me before the end of February.
Give me a call at 613-837-0699, or shoot me an email at [email protected], and we can strike a time to chat to ensure we can get you away – whether you are travelling solo, or would like to find a partner to share expenses. We can discuss options for you!
