Come Aboard AmaSofia: Three Firsthand Video Tours From Amsterdam
What does AmaWaterways’ AmaSofia look like beyond the brochure? Join me for a closer look at its public spaces, dining room and a balcony stateroom.
A river cruise ship becomes your home for a week or longer. Its atmosphere, layout and comfortable corners all become part of your holiday.
That’s why I spend time walking through ships, exploring staterooms and paying attention to the practical details that photographs and deck plans don’t always reveal.
In March 2026, I attended the ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam, where I explored 16 river cruise ships representing 11 brands.
One of those ships was AmaWaterways’ AmaSofia. I brought my camera along so you could come aboard with me.
What Does AmaSofia Look Like Inside?
When I step aboard a ship, I begin imagining how a day might unfold.
Where would you sit with your morning coffee? How does the lounge connect with the other public spaces? Would you enjoy returning here after an afternoon exploring ashore?

Two ships can sail similar itineraries and still feel quite different. Design, furnishings, lighting and the arrangement of shared spaces help shape that experience.
Walking through them gives me a better basis for helping clients compare their options.
Where Will You Dine and Relax?
Some of the nicest river cruise moments happen after you return from an excursion.
You’ve spent the day walking through a historic town or visiting a vineyard. Now you’re ready to settle into a comfortable chair, enjoy a drink and compare discoveries with your fellow travellers.
The lounge and dining room become familiar gathering places. Their atmosphere matters.

What Is an AmaSofia Stateroom Like?
Your stateroom is your personal retreat, so choosing the right category deserves some thought.
Would you use an outside balcony? How much storage do you need? Would the seating area and bathroom layout work comfortably for you?
Those questions can be difficult to answer from a small photograph.

I could certainly picture enjoying a coffee there while watching the river scenery.
But the most expensive stateroom isn’t automatically the best fit for every traveller. Location, layout and how you expect to spend your time aboard all matter.
For some clients, a balcony is an important part of the holiday. Others would get more enjoyment from putting that money towards extra nights before or after their cruise.
That’s a conversation worth having before you book.
Why Does Firsthand Ship Research Matter?
By October 2026, I had completed 16 firsthand river cruise sailings and inspected approximately 30 river ships.
My travels have taken me along the Rhine, Danube, Rhône, Seine, Magdalena and Peruvian Amazon, with experience across multiple cruise lines and styles of river travel.
During an inspection, I pay attention to:
- How the public spaces connect and feel.
- Stateroom layouts, storage and bathrooms.
- Balcony space and seating.
- Dining venues and places to gather.
- Practical considerations for travellers with different needs.
A ship inspection gives me a detailed look at the physical spaces. Sailing aboard adds another layer: experiencing the service, meals, excursions and daily rhythm.
Both inform the advice I give—and I’m clear with clients about which ships I’ve toured and which I’ve sailed.
