Why Colombia May Be River Cruising’s Most Exciting New Destination

By Sheila Gallant-Halloran | Lush Life Travel, Ottawa Virtuoso Cruise Icon — Top 1% Worldwide, Three Consecutive Years

About twelve years ago, my daughter Ciara and I travelled through Colombia together.

We explored the layered history of Bogotá, wandered the vibrant streets of Cartagena, and witnessed the remarkable transformation of Medellín — a city that had reinvented itself so thoroughly you could almost feel the optimism in the air.

That trip stayed with me. The warmth of strangers who became friends in an afternoon. The music you felt in your chest before you could place where it was coming from. The food, the colour, the sheer energy of a country that felt alive in a way few places do.

Now, more than a decade later, I’m going back.

This time, I’ll be seeing Colombia from an entirely different perspective — aboard AmaWaterways’ brand-new Magdalena River cruises.

The Magdalena River: A Destination Unlike Anything in Europe

When most people think of river cruising, they picture the Rhine, the Danube, the Seine, or the Douro. And those rivers are extraordinary — I’ve sailed three of them personally, and I’ll be leading a group down the Seine this November.

But the future of river cruising extends well beyond Europe.

I was briefed directly on the Magdalena River program by AmaWaterways co-founder Kristin Karst when I was aboard AmaSofia in Amsterdam earlier this year — as part of my second consecutive year attending the ASTA River Cruise Expo. When someone at that level takes the time to walk you through a new destination personally, you pay attention.

Colombia’s Magdalena River offers something genuinely different from a European itinerary:

  • Music and dance traditions that are woven into daily life, not staged for tourists
  • Colonial towns that feel like stepping into a living painting
  • Cuisine that is one of South America’s best-kept secrets
  • History and culture that rewards the curious traveller
  • Wildlife and natural landscapes that remind you how vast and varied this planet is
  • Authentic community connections that are increasingly rare in more-travelled destinations

From everything I’ve seen, heard, and been briefed on, this feels less like a traditional European river cruise and more like a cultural immersion through the heartland of Colombia.

Why I’m Particularly Excited — And Why You Might Be Too

As a river cruise specialist — and as someone who has personally sailed the Rhine, Danube, Seine, Nile, Mekong, Amazon, and Rhône — one of the things I love most about this form of travel is what it allows you to do differently.

You’re not simply visiting a destination. You unpack once, and each morning you wake up in the city you want to see. You taste the food, hear the music, and meet the people. River cruising puts you at the heart of a place, not at its edges.

And Colombia is a destination that deserves exactly that kind of attention.

What excites me most is returning somewhere I already love through completely new eyes. That’s one of travel’s most underrated gifts — going back years later and discovering both how much a place has evolved, and how much you have as a traveller.

Current AmaWaterways Offers for Canadian Travellers

If Colombia has been on your radar — or if this post has just put it there — there are some particularly strong offers available right now for Canadians on select AmaWaterways Magdalena River departures:

  • Complimentary airfare from Toronto or Montreal
  • Connector flights from other Canadian gateways for approximately C$300 per person
  • Complimentary land packages on select sailings

Combined with the launch of a genuinely new destination, this represents some of the best value I’ve seen from AmaWaterways in quite some time.

I should note: I work independently — I represent my clients, not the cruise lines. So when I tell you an offer is exceptional, it’s because I’ve looked across the landscape and it genuinely is.

Is a Colombia River Cruise Right for You?

The Magdalena River is ideal if you:

  • Have already done one or more European river cruises and are ready for something that will challenge your perspective
  • Are drawn to culture, music, food, and authentic community connection
  • Want to experience South America with the comfort and ease that river cruising provides
  • Are looking for a destination that feels fresh — not yet overrun, not yet a cliché

It may not be right for you if you’re looking for a classic European backdrop, Christmas market sailings, or a river cruise that functions more as a floating hotel than an immersive journey.

But if you’re ready to be genuinely surprised by a destination? Colombia is waiting.

I’ll Be Sailing the Magdalena — And I’ll Bring You Along

I’ll be aboard AmaWaterways’ Magdalena River cruise later this year. I’ll share everything: what the ship is like, how the itinerary plays out on the water, the moments that stayed with me, and the honest perspective of a Virtuoso Cruise Icon who has sailed enough rivers to know when something is special.

As always, I’ll tell you exactly what I think.

If you’d like to explore the Magdalena River — or if you’re simply at the beginning of your river cruise research and want to understand all your options — I’d love to have a conversation.
