Captain ROL: Doing the Homework So You Don’t Have To
Return on Life. Serious About Joy. ❤️
Apparently, I’ve acquired a new title: Captain ROL — Return on Life.
ChatGPT had a little fun turning me and my puffin sidekick into a caricature. And while I may not actually be captaining any ships anytime soon, the message behind Captain ROL is very much me.
Return on Life. Serious about joy.
Because behind the fun, there’s something I take very seriously: helping my clients make the most of their precious vacation time and travel investment.
And that means doing my homework.
Sometimes, of course, that homework requires getting on another ship.
It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make. 😉
Why Firsthand Travel Experience Matters
You may have noticed a few changes at LushLife.ca lately.
I’ve been significantly expanding my website, particularly around the two areas of travel I specialize in most: river cruising and expedition cruising.
As a Virtuoso Cruise Icon for three consecutive years, recognized among the top 1% of Virtuoso cruise advisors worldwide, I believe expertise comes with a responsibility.
A responsibility to keep learning, exploring, asking questions and challenging assumptions.
I’ve spent years sailing different ships, exploring destinations, meeting the people behind the experiences and comparing what cruise companies actually deliver.
Because there’s a big difference between knowing what a brochure promises and knowing what an experience really feels like.
And when clients ask me to help them choose a journey that may represent a significant investment of their time and money, I want to offer more than information they could find online.
I want to offer informed judgment, grounded in firsthand experience.
That’s what my updated website resources are designed to share.
River Cruising: There Isn’t One “Best” Cruise Line
I’ve been sailing river cruises since 2014, when I experienced Tauck’s ms Savor on its inaugural sailing.
Since then, I’ve travelled on rivers throughout Europe, explored the Peruvian Amazon and, most recently, sailed Colombia’s Magdalena River.
I’ve experienced ships from AmaWaterways, Uniworld, Tauck, Scenic, Avalon, Viking and Riverside, among others.
And one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is this:
There isn’t one best river cruise line. There’s a best river cruise line for you.
Two companies may sail the same stretch of the Rhine or Danube, visit similar ports and offer seemingly comparable itineraries.
But the onboard atmosphere, dining, cabin design, excursion choices, activity levels, inclusions and overall experience can be remarkably different.
That’s why I’ve been building out several river cruise resources on my website.
Explore My River Cruise Resources
- Firsthand River Cruise Experience — A record of the river cruise ships and itineraries I’ve personally sailed, along with ships I’ve inspected.
- Best River Cruise: How to Choose the Right One — A guide to understanding why the best river cruise isn’t necessarily the most expensive, most luxurious or most advertised.
- River Cruise Expert: Lush Life Travel — My central resource for river cruise planning, firsthand experience and expert comparisons.
There’s one distinction you’ll notice throughout these pages that matters enormously to me.
If I’ve sailed it, I say I’ve sailed it. If I’ve inspected it, I say I’ve inspected it.
Walking through a ship teaches me a great deal.
Living aboard it teaches me much more.
I want to know what it’s like to unpack, sleep, dine, explore and spend an entire week aboard.
Because those little details can make a big difference to your vacation.
Colombia: Adding Another River to My Experience
My most recent research journey took me somewhere particularly exciting.
Colombia’s Magdalena River. 🇨🇴
In September 2026, I sailed aboard AmaWaterways’ AmaMelodia, exploring a river cruise destination that is opening an entirely new way to experience Colombia.
And what an experience it was.
This wasn’t simply another river cruise on a different waterway.
It was an opportunity to understand a destination, its communities and the people bringing this new river cruise experience to life.
I spent time speaking with the captain, cruise manager, river guides and crew.
I explored colourful colonial towns, learned about traditional Colombian music and dance, watched local fishermen cast their nets and experienced the remarkable biodiversity along the Magdalena.
I made a silver filigree heart pendant in Mompox, learned to dance Cumbia in El Banco and discovered how deeply Colombia’s history, music and culture are connected to its river.
And yes, I experienced some spectacular Colombian thunderstorms!
I also saw firsthand how the team adapted when low water levels affected our itinerary.
These are the kinds of experiences that help me understand not just what a cruise includes, but how it operates when circumstances change.
Most importantly, I came home with a much better understanding of who will absolutely love a Magdalena River cruise — and who might prefer a different experience.
That’s information I can use when advising my clients.
I’m incorporating my AmaMelodia experience into my river cruise resources, along with interviews, ship tours, photos and videos from the journey.
Because my website isn’t meant to be a static collection of cruise descriptions.
It’s a living record of what I’ve actually experienced and learned.
Expedition Cruising: Adventure Is Not One-Size-Fits-All
My expedition cruising journey began in 2012 with a trip to the Galápagos Islands.
That first experience changed the direction of my travel career.
Since then, expedition travel has taken me to Antarctica, around my home province of Newfoundland, into the Peruvian Amazon, through Canada’s boreal winter and around Iceland.
I’ve travelled aboard very different expedition vessels, from purpose-built polar ships to smaller expedition vessels designed for intimate wildlife and cultural encounters.
I’ve climbed into Zodiacs and skiffs, made remote landings, snorkelled in the Galápagos, explored Antarctica, gone dog sledding, snowshoeing and ice fishing, and spent time learning from expedition leaders, naturalists and captains.
I’ve experienced the mudrooms, the dining rooms, the observation lounges and the cabins.
I’ve also learned that asking “What’s the best expedition cruise line?” is every bit as complicated as asking which river cruise line is best.
Because expedition cruising isn’t one experience.
A voyage aboard Lindblad Expeditions can be very different from one with Quark Expeditions, HX, Silversea, Seabourn or Ponant.
Some travellers prioritize wildlife and photography. Others want challenging activities, scientific discovery, cultural encounters or extraordinary destinations with a greater emphasis on luxury.
Some love the idea of kayaking among icebergs.
Others would rather enjoy the scenery from a comfortable observation lounge with a glass of champagne.
And both can have an extraordinary expedition experience.
The important thing is choosing the right one.
Explore My Expedition Cruise Resources
- Firsthand Expedition Cruise Experience — The expedition ships, destinations and experiences I’ve personally explored.
- Expedition Cruises: Explore the World Differently — An introduction to expedition cruising, the destinations and the different styles of adventure available.
- Antarctica Expedition Cruise Expert — Resources to help you understand Antarctica’s expedition operators, ships, itineraries and the choices that matter when planning this once-in-a-lifetime journey.
My goal isn’t to tell everyone to book the same expedition cruise company.
It’s to help travellers understand the differences and choose the experience that fits their interests, comfort levels and expectations.
What Can a Travel Advisor Tell You That a Brochure Can’t?
There’s an enormous amount of travel information available today.
You can find deck plans, cabin measurements, itineraries, photographs, videos and passenger reviews online.
You can ask Google or ChatGPT to compare cruise lines.
And those are useful starting points.
But there’s something different about having actually experienced a ship and destination.
For example:
- What’s it really like getting in and out of a Zodiac in Antarctica?
- How does a French balcony compare with a twin balcony when you’re actually living in the cabin?
- How active are the excursions, and what does “moderate activity” really mean?
- How well does an expedition ship function when everyone returns from an excursion at the same time?
- How does the onboard experience compare between two cruise companies that look almost identical on paper?
- What happens when weather or river conditions require an itinerary change?
- How do the crew, guides and expedition teams shape the overall experience?
And perhaps the two most important questions of all:
Who would love this journey?
And who wouldn’t?
Those are the questions I try to answer every time I travel.
Because knowing when not to recommend a particular ship or itinerary can be just as valuable as knowing when to recommend it.
The Homework Continues: Egypt, Vienna and Beyond
Of course, my research doesn’t stop with Colombia.
In November 2026, I’m heading to Egypt to sail the Nile aboard AmaWaterways’ AmaDahlia.
Egypt is one of those destinations where history, culture and the experience of travelling along the river come together in an extraordinary way.
I’m looking forward to experiencing the ship, exploring the ancient sites and understanding how a Nile river cruise compares with the European and South American rivers I’ve already sailed.
Then, in March 2027, I’ll return to Vienna for my third consecutive ASTA River Cruise Expo.
These events give me the opportunity to inspect numerous ships from different cruise companies in one location.
And yes, I’ll be doing what I always do.
Opening closets.
Examining bathrooms.
Looking under beds.
Comparing balconies.
Checking storage space.
Asking questions about cabin layouts, dining, excursions and onboard experiences.
Probably taking far too many photographs.
Because while cruise companies can tell you what makes their products special, I want to understand the differences for myself.
The details matter. Especially when I’m helping someone invest in a trip they’ve dreamed about for years.
Return on Life: The Real Reason I Do the Homework
Before becoming a luxury travel advisor, I spent more than 20 years working as an actuary.
That background taught me to analyze information, evaluate trade-offs, ask questions and look beyond the obvious numbers.
These days, I like to think of myself as a Happiness Actuary.
Instead of calculating financial returns, I’m helping clients maximize something far more personal.
Their Return on Life.
Because a great vacation isn’t simply about the number of destinations visited, the size of the suite or the price of the cruise.
It’s about what you take away from the experience.
The memories.
The discoveries.
The people you meet.
The moments that stay with you long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase.
And making sure the journey you choose is the right one for you.
That’s why I continue to sail, explore, inspect, interview and learn.
Not simply to add another ship to my list or another destination to my map.
I’m doing the homework so you don’t have to.
And when you’re ready to plan your next extraordinary journey, I want to help you make an informed choice — one based on your interests, your travel style and what matters most to you.
Because the goal isn’t just a good vacation.
It’s the right vacation for you.
And ultimately, that’s what Captain ROL is all about.
Return on Life. Serious about joy. ❤️
Live Life. Love Travel. Return on Life.
