From Zodiac landings in Iceland’s Westfjords to expert expedition teams, here’s what surprised me most about sailing aboard Aurora Expeditions’ Sylvia Earle.

When I tell people I specialize in expedition cruising, I hear the same question over and over again.

“That sounds incredible… but isn’t it a bit rugged?”

I understand the assumption.

People picture inflatable Zodiacs, remote shore landings, unpredictable weather, and destinations so far off the map that conventional cruise ships simply can’t follow.

But after spending a week aboard Aurora Expeditions’ Sylvia Earle exploring Iceland’s spectacular Westfjords, I’d happily retire the word rugged once and for all.

Because what I experienced wasn’t rough.

It was purposeful.

It was elegant.

And it completely changed the way I think about luxury adventure travel.

Aurora Expeditions’ Sylvia Earle: Expedition Ship Meets Boutique Luxury

The moment I stepped aboard Sylvia Earle, I realized expedition cruising has evolved.

Elegant lounges.

Rich teal furnishings.

A striking red chandelier.

Floor-to-ceiling windows framing Iceland’s dramatic coastline.

Beautifully designed spaces where guests gathered after each day’s exploration.

This wasn’t a ship that sacrificed comfort for adventure.

It proved the two can exist beautifully together.

Today’s best luxury expedition cruises combine sophisticated accommodations with genuine exploration, allowing travelers to experience some of the world’s most remote places without giving up exceptional service or thoughtful design.

What Makes Expedition Cruising Different?

One of the biggest surprises wasn’t Iceland itself.

It was everything happening behind the scenes.

Every Zodiac landing began long before guests climbed aboard.

The expedition team assessed tides, weather, sea conditions, wildlife activity, and landing sites. Every excursion was carefully briefed so guests understood exactly what to expect before stepping into the Zodiac.

During the voyage I spent time with Samantha Deer, the ship’s Onboard Manager, watching the remarkable coordination required to make every landing feel effortless.

It reminded me of something I believed long before I ever boarded an expedition ship.

The best adventures don’t happen by accident.

They happen because extraordinary professionals quietly think through every possibility long before guests ever notice.

That’s what makes expedition cruising feel so seamless.

What Is a Zodiac Landing Really Like?

For many first-time expedition travelers, the Zodiac is the biggest unknown.

Ironically, it quickly became my favourite part of the journey.

These small inflatable boats allow expedition ships to reach places where there are no cruise terminals, no docks, and no crowds.

Just dramatic coastlines.

Remote beaches.

Hidden coves.

Wildlife colonies.

The first time I climbed into a Zodiac, I expected to feel excitement.

What surprised me was how confident I felt.

The expedition team handled every detail.

Within minutes we were gliding quietly toward places that simply aren’t accessible any other way.

That’s the moment expedition cruising changes.

You stop looking at a destination.

You start entering it.

Expedition Cruising Is About Understanding, Not Just Seeing

One of my favourite memories from the entire voyage didn’t happen beside a glacier.

It happened on Vigur Island, deep in Iceland’s remote Westfjords.

Before we began walking, our expedition guide handed each of us a stick.

Not for hiking.

For Arctic terns.

During nesting season, Arctic terns fiercely protect their young, diving toward the highest object they can find. Holding the stick above your head encourages them to target it instead.

It sounded almost amusing.

Until one came flying directly toward me.

Then our guide shared something extraordinary.

Arctic terns travel approximately 44,000 miles (70,000 kilometres) every year—one of the longest migrations of any animal on Earth—as they journey between the Arctic and Antarctica before returning to Iceland to nest.

Suddenly, the bird diving toward my stick wasn’t aggressive.

It was remarkable.

One simple explanation completely transformed the experience.

That’s what expedition cruising does so well.

It doesn’t simply show you extraordinary places.

It helps you understand them.

Why the Expedition Team Is the Heart of Every Expedition Cruise

Looking back on my week aboard Sylvia Earle, the memories that stay with me aren’t just waterfalls, puffins, or dramatic Icelandic landscapes.

They’re the people.

The expedition leaders who could answer every question.

The scientists who explained wildlife behaviour in real time.

The historians who gave context to every shoreline.

The crew who made every Zodiac landing feel calm and effortless.

And yes…

A simple stick on Vigur Island that became an unforgettable lesson in one of nature’s greatest migrations.

Those experiences don’t happen by chance.

They happen because exceptional expedition teams dedicate their careers to helping travelers experience these places safely, responsibly, and meaningfully.

Is Expedition Cruising Right for You?

If you’ve been dreaming about Iceland, Antarctica, Greenland, the Arctic, Svalbard, Alaska, or the Galápagos, expedition cruising may be very different from what you imagine.

It isn’t about roughing it.

It’s about going deeper.

It’s about exploring extraordinary places with experts who help you understand not only what you’re seeing—but why it matters.

As a Virtuoso Cruise Icon specializing in river and expedition cruises, I’ve experienced expedition ships firsthand and work with many of the world’s leading expedition operators, including Aurora Expeditions, Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic, Quark Expeditions, HX Hurtigruten Expeditions, Ponant, Silversea Expeditions, Scenic Eclipse, and Seabourn Expeditions.

Because every expedition company offers a different experience, my role is helping you choose the one that’s the best fit for your interests, activity level, comfort preferences, and travel style.

If you’re considering your first expedition cruise, I’d love to help you plan a journey that’s every bit as extraordinary as the destination itself.
